Gilding is a decorative technique where a thin layer of gold is applied to a solid surface such as metal, wood, porcelain or stone. The use of gilding in window displays and visual merchandising can add an element of luxury to any installation. It creates a lustrous finish which catches the eye and conveys a sense of opulence.

At Minki Balinki we love using traditional methods with a modern twist and we can gild any surface turning it from mundane to extraordinary. We work with real gold leaf as well as imitation gold leaf on both interior and exterior surfaces to create outstanding displays. We are also uniquely qualified to work with coloured gild.

Why Use Gilding?

Gilding turns an object precious, making it stand out. It is often used as a way to highlight a premium product and increase its perceived value. It is ideal for the most exclusive offerings because it attracts attention and lends a window display to a high-end aura.

Gilded elements can act as focal points in a display and will draw a customer’s gaze to key areas of interest whether it’s a golden pedestal displaying a newly launched jewellery collection or a gilded antique photo frame encircling a luxury leather handbag from a top designer.

Contrary to popular belief gilding, when done correctly, will last a long time. Imitation gold leaf where brass or copper is used will develop a green patina over time, which is why we don’t recommend using it outdoors. Some gold leaf will darken over the years due to oxidation, but pure gold leaf will never tarnish.
