Why Use Polycarving?

Polycarving is a technique used to create intricate 3D sculptures of props for visual merchandising displays. It can be carved using CNC milling techniques or by hand by talented artists. Once complete, specialist finishes are applied to create the right aesthetic.

Before polycarving can begin detailed sketches and design concepts are created to make sure the finished pieces exactly match the vision you have in mind. 

Talented artists then sculpt with polystyrene foam, polyurethane foam or expanded foam depending on the needs of each project due to its lightweight nature, ease of carving and affordability. Using a combination of machine cutters, sanders, saws, knives and hot wires, they smooth contours, add intricate details and create realistic textures.

When the prop is ready the surface is typically coated for durability and realism – this may involve painting, adding textures, applying decorative elements such as gilding or metallic finishes and airbrushing to achieve the desired aesthetic effect.

Once finished the sculpture is installed in the visual display according to the design. Whether it’s a standalone focal point or part of a larger scenic backdrop integrated with other elements, every care is taken to ensure it is visually and functionally sound.
